Commencement Website
The Indiana University Commencement website is updated daily. We urge you to visit often, and to contact us if you have questions.
Tickets Are Not Required for Commencement

Who Is Eligible to Participate?
Students who have completed the requirements for graduation by May 2010 and students who will complete the requirements at the end of the 2010 summer sessions.
School Receptions and Recognition Events
All schools hold special celebrations to honor their graduates throughout Commencement weekend. Events include receptions, luncheons, dinners and recognition ceremonies. Schools issue invitations and make all arrangements. A schedule will be posted on this website when it becomes available. Degrees are not conferred at these celebrations; degrees are conferred only at Commencement ceremonies in Assembly Hall.
Application for Graduation
You must apply to graduate. Please contact the recorder’s office in the school(s) that will be granting your degree(s) or visit the “Apply to Graduate” section of the website.
Spring Grad Fair |
Caps and Gowns
All candidates for degrees must wear caps, tassels (colored to reflect school) and gowns at Commencement. If you do not participate in Grad Fair, you can rent your apparel in person from the Indiana University Bookstore in the Indiana Memorial Union or online. Follow the “Caps and Gowns” link on the Commencement website.
Apparel Distribution
Apparel will be distributed at the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse starting at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 4. Distribution times are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., on Tuesday, May 4, Wednesday, May 5, and Thursday, May 6, and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 7. On Saturday, May 8, distribution will start at 7:30 a.m. in the fieldhouse, but this option should be regarded as a last resort because time will be short and lines long.
Honor Cords
Undergraduates who are graduating with honors are entitled to wear approved honor cords. Complete information is available in the “Honors” section.
Diplomas and Covers
You will receive a keepsake diploma cover, courtesy of the IU Alumni Association, on Commencement day. Your diploma must be approved, printed, and mailed to you after the ceremony. It takes about three months.
Visiting Bloomington and Accommodations
Hotels and bed and breakfasts take reservations up to a year in advance, and many fill up early for Commencement weekend. Book your accommodations as early as possible. See “Visit Bloomington.”
Arrangements for Guests with Disabilities
Seating will be provided for those who need sign language interpretation, and space will be available for wheelchair users. Please contact the Indiana University Alumni Office by calling (812) 855-4664 to make arrangements.
Parking
Parking can be challenging on Commencement day. Our best advice is to arrive early and allow ample time to make your way from the parking lots to Assembly Hall. For information about handicapped drop-off and for other parking tips, see “Maps and Parking” section of the Commencement website.
Commencement Day
Graduates are asked to report to Gladstein Fieldhouse by 8:30 a.m. for the morning lineup or 1:30 p.m. for the afternoon lineup (earlier if you still need to pick up your apparel). Once inside, look for your school banner or sign (such as “College of Arts and Sciences” or “School of Continuing Studies”). Candidates will line up by school. School marshals will assist.
Appropriate Attire and Conduct
Business or business-casual attire is appropriate on Commencement day, and degree candidates are asked to wait until they arrive in Gladstein Fieldhouse before putting on caps and gowns. Only students in appropriate apparel will be allowed to process into Assembly Hall. The Commencement Committee requests your help in upholding the dignity and tradition of the ceremony by avoiding any action that may be distracting or inappropriate. No alcoholic beverages are permitted in Gladstein Fieldhouse or Assembly Hall; anyone found to be carrying alcoholic beverages will be escorted from the building. All degree candidates in attendance are expected to remain for the entire ceremony.
