Did You Get a Packet for May? No Worries.

If you received a May 2012 graduation packet but are planning to graduate on Saturday, don't worry.  If you're eligible and applied to graduate in December, you will. Just ignore the May packet ... or pass it on to someone who can use it.

No Tickets, No Reserved Seats, Free Parking

Commencement is free and open to the public. There are no tickets and no reserved seats. Parking is free.

All About the Ceremonies

Winter 2011 Ceremony

General Information

December Commencement exercises are open to candidates for graduate and undergraduate degrees. The ceremony typically runs 90 minutes and includes the procession of degree candidates, an address by a Commencement speaker, induction into the IU Alumni Association, the hooding of Ph.D. and doctoral candidates, and the conferral of degrees.

It was held on Saturday, December 17, 2011, in Assembly Hall, 1001 E. 17th Street, Bloomington, IN 47408.

Graduating students must report to Gladstein Fieldhouse, next door to Assembly Hall, by 8:30 a.m. The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will conclude at about 11:30 a.m. For more information about the schedule, see Details for the Big Day.

Degrees Conferred

All degree candidates (both graduate and undergraduate students) completing degree requirements for all degrees between September 1 and December 31 participate in the single December ceremony. Students who complete degree requirements between January 1 and August 31 participate in one of the three May ceremonies. There is no summer ceremony.

Who is Eligible to Participate?

  • Undergraduate students who have completed the requirements for graduation between September 1 and December 31
  • Graduate students who have completed University Graduate School requirements between September 1 and December 31

Invitations and Announcements

Printed invitations for December Commencement are mailed to permanent addresses in November, and students receive an e-mail message confirming that invitations have been sent.

Customized graduation announcements are available for purchase at GradFair, and online at Herff Jones, the university's authorized Commencement vendor. Announcements include the student's name and the title of his or her degree, major(s) and minor(s), and whether the student has qualified for honors. Announcements can be ordered at any time; please allow 10 to 14 days for printing and delivery.
