All About the Ceremonies

Spring 2017 Undergrad Ceremony

General Information

Candidates for all bachelor's degrees will graduate on Saturday, May 6, 2017, 10 a.m., in Memorial Stadium, 1001 E. 17th Street, in Bloomington.

What About the Weather?

The Commencement team has a weather plan that matches what happens at football games in Memorial Stadium. If it’s simply raining, the ceremony will proceed. If there’s severe weather, we’ll have an emergency plan that will be clearly communicated on the day of the ceremony. Emergency information will be posted on this website and our Twitter account.

Guests and graduates are advised to dress for the weather. We’ll be distributing free IU ponchos to students, families, and friends if rain is in the forecast. They’ll be readily available in Memorial Stadium. We’re not able to permit umbrellas, however, because they can cause injuries in close quarters and because umbrellas tend to spill water on people who are surrounding them and block visibility.

Eligibility to Graduate

Students who have completed the requirements for graduation by May 2017 and students who will complete the requirements by the end of the 2017 summer sessions are eligible to participate in Commencement ceremonies.

Candidates completing degree requirements between September 1 and December 31 participate in the December ceremony. There is no summer ceremony.

Invitations and Announcements

Printed invitations are mailed to permanent student addresses in mid-March, after spring break.

Customized graduation announcements are available for purchase at the spring GradFair, and online at Herff Jones, the university's authorized Commencement vendor. Announcements include the student's name and the title of his or her degree, the major(s) and minor(s), and whether the student has qualified for honors. Announcements can be ordered at any time after January 2017; please allow 10 to 14 days for printing and delivery.

Online apparel orders for Spring 2017

Students who do not pre-order apparel by late March 2017 may rent it on site on a first-come, first-served basis during distribution week (a $75.00 late fee will be added during this time). Further information about apparel is available in the Caps and Gowns section.
