Bloomington Commencement Feature

Hooding of Doctoral Candidates at Graduate Commencement in May

Doctoral candidates who are being hooded are responsible for arranging with their faculty mentors to meet them at Gladstein Fieldhouse, 1001 E. 17th Street, directly east of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall (where Commencement takes place) for robing and lineup. Both students and their faculty mentors are instructed to arrive for robing and lineup by 1 p.m.. on Friday, May 5.

Where Do We Sit?

Graduate seating is arranged by school and occupies much of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Students do not line up alphabetically, and they process through a number of doors, which means a grad may wind up anywhere in a school section.

Guest seating is on a first-come, first-served basis, and it fills Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Indiana University Bloomington is proud of the fact that it does not limit the number of guests a student may invite to Commencement, and we ask everyone’s help in maintaining this tradition.

Ushers will be stationed throughout the building to direct all guests to the best possible seats. Given the size of the Commencement audience (up to 8,000), large parties are not allowed to save seats. Instead, we ask groups to gather outside and then come in together, asking an usher to help them find seats.
