Spring 2017 Grad Ceremony

Accessibility Assistance

Specially trained Commencement organizers provide a number of services for guests who need a helping hand. We strive to meet all needs, and we urge you to let us know if you or a member of your party requires help at the Graduate ceremony on Friday, May 5. We also ask your patience. With more than 8,000 people attending the ceremony, it can take a little extra time and effort to make sure that guests in wheelchairs and with limited mobility enjoy the day and are comfortable.

Guests in Wheelchairs: Prior Arrangements Required

  • Prior parking and seating arrangements are available for guests in wheelchairs at the May 5 Graduate Commencement ceremony in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, but they must be made in advance. All parking and seating at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, including accessibility parking and seating, is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Arrangements are made for access to certain parking and seating areas, not for specific parking spots or seats.
  • To be provided passes for parking and admittance to the accessible seating area in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, please contact Commencement Accessibility Support at or (812) 855-4723.
  • The parking lot for guests in wheelchairs is available in a designated lot off Fee Lane. Use gate 13. Only drivers presenting the appropriate IU Commencement passes obtained via prearrangement with Event Services will be admitted.
  • Guests in wheelchairs may be dropped off at the lobby entrance on the north side of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Accommodations and staff will be available as these guests wait for their drivers to park and return to the lobby entrance.
  • Uniformed ushers will guide these parties to the appropriate seating areas. Please note: Individual seats are not assigned to the parties of guests who use wheelchairs. There will be a chair for one guest placed near each wheelchair. Because seating in the wheelchair section is extremely limited, in most cases, additional members of parties that include a guest who uses a wheelchair will be directed to other nearby seating.
  • IU must request that wheelchair users bring their own wheelchairs.

Guests with Limited Mobility: Prior Arrangements Not Needed

  • Patrons who have any difficulty walking, going up and down ramps, or climbing stairs, and individuals who use walkers or canes, should be dropped off at the north entrance of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
  • The needs of these guests will be accommodated on the day of the ceremony; you do not need to contact Event Services for prior arrangements.
  • Drivers should enter the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall parking lot off 17th Street and follow the directions of the uniformed parking attendants.
  • Once inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, convenient special seating for guests with limited mobility will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests will not need to climb stairs or go up ramps to reach this section.
  • Parties must be complete before being seated. To accommodate everyone’s needs, large parties may be asked to separate, with some patrons watching the ceremony from a general seating area. Guests may not save seats in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.

Parking for Cars Bearing State-Issued Accessibility Tags

  • Guests arriving in vehicles bearing state-issued accessibility tags should enter the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall parking lot from Fee Lane and follow the instructions above.

Guests with Hearing Impairments

  • Closed captioning and sign language interpreters will be provided.
  • On request, ushers will direct guests with hearing impairments to designated seating.
