Graduate Degree Colors

Not sure about what color hood and tassel you should be ordering?  Check out this chart for a list of schools, degrees and appropriate colors.

Purchasing Custom Apparel

Bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral robes may be purchased from the IU Bookstore or Herff Jones, the university’s licensed Commencement vendor. Faculty wishing to purchase apparel should contact the IU Bookstore (812) 855-6823. Graduate students who are planning on working in the field of higher education may wish to consider buying their own regalia. Custom apparel is available for purchase from Herff Jones.

Caps and Gowns

Ordering Information—Winter 2013

All candidates for degrees must wear custom IU apparel at Commencement. Gowns are rented, not purchased, and must be returned after the ceremony. Students keep their caps, tassels, and stoles of gratitude, but graduate students must return rented hoods with their rented gowns.

Online ordering for Winter Commencement will open fall 2013!

If you do not order your cap and gown online, you can still rent them during distribution week (see below). Apparel is available on a first-come, first-served basis, so we urge you to visit the IU Bookstore on Monday, December 16 or Tuesday, December 17, to ensure availability in your size.

Rental Charges

Indiana's 7 percent sales tax will be added to these charges. A late rental charge of $50 is added during the last week of online rental orders and for caps and gowns ordered during distribution week.

  • Bachelor's and associate degree apparel: $51.50.
  • Master's: $72.42.
  • Doctoral/Ph.D.: $88.20.

Associate and bachelor's degree candidates have the option of purchasing additional stoles of gratitude for $25.

Distribution Week

Caps and gowns will be distributed for Winter Commencement, December 16 - 20, in the IU Bookstore in the Indiana Memorial Union. Hours are 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, December 21, distribution will occur at the Gladstein Fieldhouse starting at 8 a.m. This option should be regarded as a last resort because time will be short, supplies limited, and lines potentially long.

Monday and Tuesday are the preferred days for students whose last names begin with the letters A through N. Wednesday and Thursday are the preferred days for students whose last names begin with the letters O through Z.

You must have a picture ID to pick up your apparel. If someone else is picking it up for you, that person must bring a copy of the receipt you received either in person or via e-mail, and a note from you indicating permission to collect your cap and gown.

Return

All rented apparel must be returned to Gladstein Fieldhouse after the ceremony. Return instructions will be available at pick-up.

Note: Cap and gown orders are available only for the closest upcoming ceremony. Students intending to graduate in the spring of 2014 may not order apparel in the fall of 2013. Any orders placed in the fall will not be carried over to the spring, and refunds will not be given.
