Caps and Gowns
Ordering Information--Spring 2017
All candidates for degrees must wear custom IU apparel at Commencement. Gowns are rented, not purchased, and must be returned after the ceremony. Students keep their caps, tassels, and stoles of gratitude, but graduate students must return rented hoods with their rented gowns.
If you don't order a cap and gown online, you'll be able to rent them in person during distribution week. Apparel will be available then on a first-come, first-served basis, and a late fee will be applied.
Distribution Times and Places
Caps and gowns will be distributed for May Commencement in the IU Bookstore in the Indiana Memorial Union. Hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. On Friday, May 5, distribution of graduate student caps and gowns will occur at Memorial Stadium, directly south of Mellencamp Pavilion, beginning at 1 p.m. On Saturday, May 6, distribution of undergraduate student caps and gowns will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Mellencamp Pavilion, directly north of Memorial Stadium. Picking up caps and gowns on the day of your graduation ceremony should be regarded as a last resort because time will be short, supplies limited, and lines potentially long.
The IU Bookstore prefers that students whose last names begin with the letters A through N pick up their apparel on Monday and Tuesday of Distribution Week, and that students whose names begin with the letters O through Z pick up their appareal on Wednesday and Thursday.
You must have a picture ID to pick up your apparel. If someone else is picking it up for you, that person must bring a copy of the receipt you received either in person or via email, and a note from you indicating permission to collect your cap and gown.
All rented apparel must be returned after the ceremony. Return instructions will be available at pick-up.
Note: Cap and gown orders are available only for the closest upcoming ceremony. Students intending to graduate in the winter of 2016 may not order apparel in the spring. Any orders placed in the spring will not be carried over to the winter, and refunds will not be given.
More detailed information addressing dates and rental charges will be available after January 2017.
