Caps and Gowns
Ordering Information--Spring 2014
All candidates for degrees must wear custom IU apparel at Commencement. Gowns are rented, not purchased, and must be returned after the ceremony. Students keep their caps, tassels, and stoles of gratitude, but graduate students must return rented hoods with their rented gowns.
Online ordering for Spring Commencement at Herff Jones is now open.
- For associate's and bachelor's gowns, the early rental fee is $52.55 plus 7% sales tax until March 28, 2014.
- For master's gowns, the early rental fee is $73.43 plus 7% sales tax until March 28, 2014.
- For doctoral gowns, the rental fee is $89.43 plus 7% sales tax.
- For associate's, bachelor's, and master's gowns, a late fee of $75 takes effect on March 29.
- All online orders close on April 4, 2014.
If you don't order a cap and gown online, you'll be able to rent them in person during distribution week. Apparel will be available then on a first-come, first-served basis, and the late fee will be applied unless you are a doctoral graduate.
Rental Charges during Distribution Week
A late rental charge of $75 is added during the last week of online rental orders and for caps and gowns ordered during distribution week.
- Bachelor's and associate degree apparel: $127.22 plus 7% sales tax.
- Master's: $148.43 plus 7% sales tax.
- Doctoral/Ph.D.: $89.43 plus 7% sales tax.
Associate and bachelor's degree candidates have the option of purchasing additional stoles of gratitude for $25.
Distribution Times and Places
Caps and gowns will be distributed for Spring Commencement May 6-9 in the IU Bookstore in the Indiana Memorial Union. Hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m. On Saturday, May 10, distribution will occur at the Gladstein Fieldhouse starting at 8 a.m. This option should be regarded as a last resort because time will be short, supplies limited, and lines potentially long.
Monday and Tuesday are the preferred days for students whose last names begin with the letters A through N. Wednesday and Thursday are the preferred days for students whose last names begin with the letters O through Z.
You must have a picture ID to pick up your apparel. If someone else is picking it up for you, that person must bring a copy of the receipt you received either in person or via e-mail, and a note from you indicating permission to collect your cap and gown.
All rented apparel must be returned to Gladstein Fieldhouse after the ceremony. Return instructions will be available at pick-up.
Note: Cap and gown orders are available only for the closest upcoming ceremony. Students intending to graduate in the fall of 2014 may not order apparel in the spring of 2014. Any orders placed in the spring will not be carried over to the fall, and refunds will not be given.
