Caps and Gowns
Cap and Gown Distribution
The time to pick up caps and gowns is during distribution week. This is also the final opportunity to rent a cap and gown if you didn't pre-order. We recommend pre-ordering during the online rental period because prices are higher during distribution week. For students who did not order earlier, caps and gowns will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Sizes may vary, and lines are potentially long.
Pickup and Return
Caps and gowns will be distributed for May Commencement in the IU Bookstore in the Indiana Memorial Union from May 1 through May 5. Hours are 8 a.m.-6 p.m.
On Friday, May 5 (Graduate Commencement day), caps and gowns may be obtained in Gladstein Fieldhouse, directly east of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall beginning at 9 a.m. On Saturday, May 6 (Undergraduate Commencement day), caps and gowns may be obtained in Mellencamp Pavilion, directly north of Memorial Stadium. Picking up apparel on the day of your graduation ceremony should be regarded as a last resort because time will be short, supplies limited, and lines potentially long. You must have a picture ID to pick up your apparel. If someone else is picking it up for you, they must have a copy of the receipt you received either in person or via email, and a note from you indicating they have your permission to collect your cap and gown.
All apparel must be returned by 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, in the Herff Jones trailer on the grounds of Memorial Stadium. Failure to return apparel may result in a penalty fine.
All candidates for degrees must wear custom IU apparel at Commencement. Gowns are rented, not purchased, and must be returned after the ceremony. Students may keep their caps, tassels and stoles of gratitude, but graduate students must return rented hoods with their rental gowns.
Note: Cap and gown orders are available only for the closest upcoming ceremony. Students intending to graduate in the winter of 2017 may not order apparel in the spring. Any orders placed in the fall will not be carried over to the spring, and refunds will not be given.
